Well, look at that. Bagpipe Monday has come back to Subway Domer after 2 years of playing the prodigal son. The feature was of the “weekly” nature for many years, but once the site gained a couple of handfuls of contributors, it was cautiously and respectfully put on the shelf. Before all of that, it was home to many different types of posts; from rants, to polls, to ridiculous photos, to- well… anything.
Now that Subway Domer has one lonely lunatic operator again, it only feels right to bring back this eclectic tool of content production.
So what shall we talk about? Well, since we are on the topic of “resurrections” perhaps we should discuss the one currently underway at Notre Dame. It seems like a silly notion to talk about a resurrection at Notre Dame when the Irish are only one year removed from a perfect regular season and the ultimate response to insane questions about its relevancy. Still, the Fighting Irish are always under the microscope, and given the turn of events last year, and with all of the recent offseason issues; Notre Dame is ready to rise once more.
It’s all there in plain view if you only choose to open your eyes. Brian Kelly and Jack Swarbrick have made enough changes to the program to certainly make it feel like something new, like something that has been reborn. Keep in mind that just because something is resurrected or reborn, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it comes back the same, or even similar to anything it was before. It is the same, but different- changed.
The stadium no longer has grass, and the uniforms are manufactured under a new and young company. The helmets are no longer painted by student managers and the Irish guard is going to consist exclusively of current band members. These are just some of the differences that we will see this fall and beyond, but they aren’t what is important.
The change to come, the resurrection to be is of this Notre Dame offense. No, it won’t be much of anything like the offense once seen under Lou Holtz, but the theme should be the same. That theme being, “domination.” It doesn’t matter what form that domination takes, just as long as the job is done with utter destruction.
There are no real excuses for Brian Kelly and this offense this year. Even without (possibly) DaVaris Daniels, the Irish offense has every piece in place to, for lack of a better phrase, “impose its will” upon opposing defenses. Sure there are a few spots still a bit unproven, but with Everett Golson running the offense and Kelly back to calling the plays, anything less than a whirlwind of yards and points will be a complete disappointment.
It all starts this week against Rice. Could we finally see the offensive resurrection that we have been waiting on since 2010? Can the Irish offense find that perfect balance- not of running and passing, but of kill and destroy? I have my own doubts, but they are supremely outnumbered by my hopes. It starts this week.
