Everett Golson just pitched the strangest game of his career. Last Saturday night’s game had a little of just about anything you can think of in terms of quarterback performance. Golson was credited with four turnovers- one of which was an interception that was returned for a touchdown, but he also threw for over 360 yards and 4 touchdowns.
We have never seen this kind of play from Everett Golson before. We’ve never seen it, and it might be the best explanation of what exactly happened.
As someone else has probably pointed out by now, in 2012, Golson was replaced by Tommy Rees on a number of occasions when Golson just wasn’t getting it done (or just making dumb mistakes). Purdue and Michigan are great examples of that year. Basically, Golson is still learning how to overcome mental mistakes made in a game while still playing the game. He’s learning how to get that “mental toughness” that Brian Kelly can’t talk about enough.

This is going to take some time, and unfortunately, it is never something that goes unnoticed at the quarterback position. Everett has to learn to overcome, and stay focused and loose even when things go against the plan. Thankfully this happened while playing a team like Syracuse, and I’m confident that Golson will never have a 4 turnover game again while at Notre Dame.
I’m all for learning on the job, and despite age, class, or number of previous starts- Golson is still learning how to be the quarterback at Notre Dame. That education can be filled with a lot of trick questions along the way, but with Brian Kelly, and a strong supporting cast, this is a test that Golson can ace.
