Outside of a loss, there is nothing more humbling to a football program than “escaping” with a win over a team when a “blowout” was what was needed. That exact thing happened to the Irish this weekend as they defeated Navy 49-39. With the point spread for the game being around 14 points, a 10 point win shouldn’t be that bad- but it was. The perception of the program has dramatically changed once again.
I wonder if that’s entirely fair. I ask you this one question: If the Navy and Florida State games were flip-flopped, but the results were the same, how would Notre Dame be perceived right now by the media, CFB Playoff committee, and by you?
I imagine it would be more like what it was a week ago, but as always… opinions.
