Finding Comfort In Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly kicked off Notre Dame's 2013 season with a press conference at noon yesterday that left me no better informed on the program than I was at 11:59 AM.

Perhaps that's a bit of an overstatement, but when the two biggest items that I took away from the presser were weight gains and that Kelly's contract extension was "imminent," I felt a little hollow.

That's not to say that both of those situations aren't important, but both seemed like items that are dropped in press releases and distributed via email to the media.

So I sat down last night and attempted to write about the press conference and it just screamed "too boring" for me to give any concentration to.

It wasn't until this morning that I truly appreciated what press conferences like that mean to the program. Boring = solid.

The program seems to be on the right track with Brian Kelly and this staff, and boring press conferences like the one yesterday, are the proof. Maybe that's another overstatement, but those type of things remind me of other programs that have been perennially top 10 teams over the past decade.

Sure, there are questions, and the answers have not been presented, but there doesn't seem to be that sense of melancholy, doubt, worry, and that flat out urgency that we have seen in the past. I'm comfortable with that, and even comforted in the fact that things seem dull.

After 6 months of "exciting" news, I'll take this every time.

Here is the press conference in its entirety:
