Welcome to Play on Playa, a “new” summer series from Subway Domer. All summer long, we are going to be checking out the profiles of every player on the roster (hopefully, with fingers crossed while sucking on a four leaf clover) and develop the hierarchy of what type of “Playa” each guy is on this team.

Running Back
Jonas Gray, (Detroit native) has been a complete enigma throughout his career at Notre Dame. Although most of his tenure saw Notre Dame with a lot of depth at running back, it’s not like ND had the most talented backfield. True, Armando Allen was a consistent performer, but despite having some dominating moments, Robert Hughes was never a consistent runner. Gray, could have been “the man” if he learned his lesson quicker than Robert Hughes did… you’re a big back- RUN LIKE ONE!
2009 was more of the same with Gray. He carried the ball 20 times for 100 yards and 0 TD’s. Gray has averaged 25 carries and 103 yards with 0 TD’s a year in his three years at Notre Dame. ZERO TOUCHDOWNS. You have to feel sympathetic for the kid. Sympathetic, yes, but his production is damn frustrating to understand given his athletic ability.

Role Playa:
There may be no other way around it this year;Jonas Gray is going to get a lot more carries. That’s not a “bad” thing, it’s just different than are used to. The biggest hope, is that Gray turns into late season 2010 Robert Hughes, and less like another bigger back trying to be Reggie Bush. Gray will have a role to play, but will he perform like an action hero, or will he stay with the comedy routine? |
