Notre Dame’s 56-14 victory over Navy was a much needed blowout. The game was never in any real jeopardy once toe met leather. The Fighting Irish manhandled Navy all day. It was a handling of Navy that Notre Dame has not done in quite some time. Even before the 2007 streak ending loss, and then losing 3 out 4 to Navy, the Irish had some very close games against worse Midshipmen team than the one that just lost.
Still, the big “storyline” coming into the game, was Notre Dame’s internal problems. Although I firmly believe a lot of what was “reported” was grossly over exaggerated, there was still a lot of things going on between Kelly, his staff, and the players. Nothing was certain in respect to how the Irish would end up playing.
As it turned out; things worked out for the best.
I found it interesting that the first offensive play that Notre Dame ran, was that quick hitch to Floyd. It spoke volumes about what this team needed, and what they wanted. Floyd was pretty quiet against USC, and as one of those senior leaders- the Irish needed him to be more involved to help smooth over the offense, and some mentalities.
Floyd anwered the call with a 6 reception, 121 yard, and 1 touchdown game. Floyd also had one “carry” for 10 yards and another touchdown. It was more than enough to help win the game, but it also was a way to set things straight.
