After the loss of Kyle Rudolph was announced this week, many people thought that there would be an overwhelmingly significant drop in production from the tight end position. That was hardly the case, as Tyler Eifert hauled in 4 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown strike from Crist to Eifert was a 39 yard pass play that showed Eifert wide open, and then using his surprisingly good speed for his size to take the rock to paydirt.
Tyker Eifert wasn’t the only Bishop Dwenger graduate to have a nice play on Saturday. Wide receiver, John Goodman, had his number called right after a Western Michigan turnover. Goodman answered the call with a reverse pass that went 32 yards to Michael Floyd for an Irish touchdown. It’s the play we have been waiting to see work since Goodman came to Notre Dame in 2008, after playing quarterback for Dwenger his senior year.
Way to represent the Fort fellas!
Before we get too crazy with patting ourselves on the back after this 44-20 victory over Western Michigan, I do have one small stat that I have to point out… Notre Dame has not had a 100 yard rusher in a game since Armando Allen in the 2009 UConn game. That was 8 games ago. Yes, the Irish had a nice ground game in the second half against Western, but the first half saw them rush for a total of -4 yards. It looked like Cierre was going to finally get over the century mark for the Irish, but he finished the game with 94 yards, while Robert Hughes finished with 63 after he started getting some carries while subbing in for Wood. It’s really not that big of a deal… but I thought I would mention it this morning.
The Hangover post should be out Monday/Tuesday-ish. Until then, here are some post game interview videos including the aforementioned Eifert and Coack Kelly, as well as some others…
