#1 Notre Dame 22, USC 13
As the clock ticked down to triple zeroes my girlfriend jumped onto the ottoman, arms raised. I rose from my seat clapping like I'd seen the most fantastical magic trick ever performed. I proceeded to grab my lady friend and spin her around the Man Cave before planting a big kiss on her smiling lips. It was all quite perfect.
Then I sat down and stared blankly at the scene unfolding in Los Angeles, California. I'd been in that stadium, watching these teams throughout my youth. Never had I seen it like this. It was amazing. It was beautiful. It was inspiring. It was why I fell in love with all things Notre Dame in spite of no actual connection to the team or university.
For those of us that follow this team and track every detail affecting the program – it won't sink in for a few days, if ever. Notre Dame's games will be more fun to watch this offseason knowing they won, but the Irish won their way – tough, gritty, determined. It was rarely pretty, but it all has produced the same outcome – Notre Dame is undefeated and the ONLY team in America who is the unquestioned choice for the National Championship Game.
It's been quite a ride. No blogger or degree-laden writer can encapsulate this team or this season with the written word. Their story is told in goal-line stands, punishing runs, improbable catches, red zone defense and a little bit of luck. We're #1 for the next 6 weeks. Let's enjoy the ride and celebrate some young men who've put in the work.
Go.Irish.
